Somatic Psychotherapy

Moving Beyond Words

Explore

What is Somatic Psychotherapy, and how do I know if it's for me?

Somatic psychotherapy focuses on our body (from the Greek soma) as an integral part of therapy, acknowledging the connection between our mind, body and emotions, and the way these parts shape who we are. Have you ever felt like you had a knot in your stomach before an important day? Or perhaps felt your body relax with a deep breath as soon as that day was over? Our experiences are held not only in our mind, but in our body, and focusing our attention on it provides us with a wider perspective on ourselves, telling us a story beyond words.

Working directly with the body can help regulate the nervous system, improve your understanding of what your needs are and how to meet them, allow new emotions to emerge and process past or present experiences in a way that is tailored to your needs.

Any work with the body will always be offered gently, collaboratively, and with your consent. We will only work in a way that is comfortable for you, and there is absolutely no pressure to work in ways that do not feel right. There are multiple ways of working with the body that don't include any form of touch or even moving away from your seat — this is a space for you to feel comfortable first and foremost, and we can find an approach that supports you at your own pace.

Who is this kind of therapy for?

Anyone who would like to promote their wellbeing and create long-lasting change, using a holistic perspective and approach that incorporates their mind, body and emotions altogether.

This approach can help with:

What therapy might look like

A conversation about your needs, setting a goal for therapy, understanding your personal history and current situation.

Exploring what your needs look like physically — shifting focus from words to experience through breathing exercises, guided meditation, movement, and more.

Exploring the impact your emotions have on your body and vice versa, and how this affects your everyday life — especially the moments you struggle with.

Implementing new strategies to help you cope with your challenges and grow towards the life you want.

Exploring your history and how your personal context has shaped the way you see the world — focusing on what you would like to empower and what you would like to change.

Exploring and anchoring internal and external resources, for a more effective support system.

Past · Present · Future

I look at therapy sessions as an opportunity to explore — both verbally and physically — your past, present and future:

Past

We investigate the past to get a better understanding of how you got to where you are today, your patterns and coping mechanisms, attachments and views of yourself and the world.

Present

We focus on your needs, empower what promotes your wellbeing, and challenge what obstructs it.

Future

We imagine what the future might look like, creating a path towards balance, self-regulation, and grounded wellbeing, based on your hopes and aspirations.

If this sounds like something you would like to try, I would be happy to schedule a 15-minute introduction call to talk about your needs, answer any questions, and see if we could be a good fit.
